Before he was 21 [before 1907], when he would have had to go into the Russian army, he immigrated to Birmingham, Alabama. He came with a large family from Latvia [Glazmanka?, Latvia] called Hamburg. He worked for the City Paper Company. Two years later, his brother, Henry, came to the U.S. and later moved into an apartment with Sam in Birmingham. They lived with his landlady, Rebecca Jaffee. He went to Birmingham because his relatives named Meilach (known in the US as May) lived there. About two years later, Henri, his brother, came to the U.S. and lived with Sam in Birmingham, AL. The Hamburgs settled in Evansville, IN, and that's how Sam came to move from Birmingham to Evansville. They offered Sam a job in their retail store, and later promoted him to manager of one of their stores. Sam eventually went into the retail business for himself, opening a store called: Grusins at 800 N. Main St, Evansville, IN. Henri, Sam's brother, was living with Sam and Jennie and their family in Evansville, IN, until he and Rosabelle eloped and were married.
