[Source: Taped interview with daughter, Celia Grusin Danenberg, March 1977.] CENSUS: 1897: Hana [Chana] [surname not given, daughter of Peisach, 35 years old, born in Glazmanka. Lieves with husband and children. Residence: Lesnaja (Forest) I St, Apt 2, in the house of Gruzin. Age is stated approximately for 1896. [Source: 1897 Latvian State Census, Latvian State Historical Archives, Fond #2706, LSHA #2706-1-99-759.] FAMILY NOTES: Immigrated to the United States in 1914, with husband and daughter, Celia. The ship stopped in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Because of a mix-up with their visas, they had to get off there and take the train to Birmingham. They lived upstairs of sons, Sam and Henri, on St Charles St and 15th St South. Said she was born and his last residence was Glasmanka, province of Witebsk [Vitesk]; nationality, Russian; race, Hebrew. Height: 5'2"; dark hair, brown eyes. She has no distinguishing marks. Can read and write. Closest relative in country she came from [Latvia] was cousin L. Meilach. Going to Birmingham, Alabama. Closest relative in country going to is son, S [Sam] Grusin, City Paper Co., Birmingham. Passage paid by self. Never before in U.S. Entered U.S. via Port Huron, Michigan, 1 July 1914, G.T.R. Note: brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Moses and Reva Grusin stayed on the ship until it landed in New York Jun 29, 1914. Came to U.S. with wife and children in 1914. Lives with daughter, Celia, 23 years old, Bookkeeper in a Shoe Store; and son, Henry, 25 years old, Watchmaker at Limehan [sp?]. Also in house is a roomer, Simon Balsam [Balsum?], 25 years old, Peddler for Dry Goods, came to the U.S. in 1914. Yankel, Chana, and Celia are aliens, not naturalized. Henry came to the U.S. in 1912 and was naturalized in 1919. Except for Yankel's mother and father whose 'Mother Tongue' was Yiddish, everyone elses was German. All born in Riga [actually Glazmanka?], Latvia.
