    • Message Board Post: ROSENBAUM, Edna Mae Wieland May 15, 1910 - June 19, 2005 Edna grew up on the Wieland Farm in Manistique, MI, the eldest of six children. During her girlhood, she attended the one room Kiawatha Grade School and assisted her family on the farm. She washed clothes on a washing board with Fels Naptha soap and wrung them through the ringer on wash day, worked in the family garden, went berrying, canned food for the winter months, picked potato bugs off the vines, picked the mustard stalks out of the oat and barley fields, drove the team of horses for her father during haying season, watched over her younger siblings, and cooked, cleaned, and sewed like most girls of her day. Edna graduated from high school at the age of 16 and graduated from the nursing program at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, IL in 1932. That same year, she met Sylvan "Mike" Rosenbaum, who was working as a lawyer in Chicago. They were married in Chicago, IL in 1935. Their daughter, Carolyn Marcia, was born in 1937, followed by a son, Edwin S. "Butch" in 1940. During WW II, Edna trained over 200 nurses for the war as a Red Cross volunteer. These were happy years when Mike worked at the Kalamazoo Pant Company and the family enjoyed their summer cottage at Gull Lake, where Butch and Carolyn raced sailboats as teenagers. Mike and Edna Rosenbaum retired to Sarasota, FL in 1968. There they were involved with the New College Music Festival (Mike was a board member), and The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, where Edna worked as a volunteer lecturer. As a Master Needle Crafter, Edna also contributed articles to the Embroiderer's Guild. The Rosenbaums enjoyed traveling, eating out, all the cultural events Sarasota had to offer, walks along the Gulf beaches, and frequent visits from family and friends. After Mike's death, Edna moved to Tempe, AZ to be near her son, Butch. She died at the ripe age of 95, having seen most of the 20th century unfold. As a girl, her home had no running water, indoor bathrooms, electricity, or central heat. ! She lived from horse and buggy and dirt road times to the modern age, learning to play FreeCell on the computer at 89! Edna will be fondly remembered for her wisdom, her graciousness, her creativity, and her warmth. She is survived by three of her siblings, Mildred, Marian and Bud; her son, Butch (and Joni) Rosenbaum; her son-in-law, Garry Hama- cher; her five grandchildren, Kara (and Rob) Girvin, Scott Rosenbaum (and Gretchen Piper), Mike Jessop, Laura (and Hugh) Carr, and Anne Duret; and her nine great-grandchildren, James, Paige, and Ruth Jessop; Daniel and Stuart Shaw, Anais and Aniele Duret; and Louise and Samuel Rosenbaum. Should you wish to remember Mrs. Rosenbaum, donations are being accepted in her name to The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, 5401 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota, Florida 34243, (941) 359-5838. Published in the Kalamazoo Gazette on 8/14/2005. (Posted by a volunteer-no family connection) [1]
