| Notes |
- Known to my mother and her siblings as "Gropa". He was a "free thinker", and a disciple of Robert Ingersol (the famous agnostic) and Elbert Hubbard (Roycrofters, etc.). Samuel emigrated to America because of religious differences with his strict Orthodox father, Sussman (and NOT for economic or military reasons.). He sailed from Bremen, Germany, on the SS Indiana, and arrived in the Port of New York on September 23, 1857, bound for Michigan. (Ship records erroneously show his age at the time as "30"...in fact, he was 19 years old. He settled in Three Rivers, and didn't arrive in Kalamazoo until after the Civil War. He came to Kalamazoo in 1867 because his older brother, Simon, was already established there. He joined the Unitarian church in Kalamazoo in 1858 and was a life member although he much later affiliated with the Reformed Jewish Congregation for social reasons. He was naturalized as an American citizen in Kalamazoo on Friday, January 26, 1866. In early 1866, he returned to Germany with his wife, Henrietta and his son, Louis; they returned, along with daughter Caroline who was born while her parents were in Germany, on the SS America, sailing again from Bremen, and arriving at the port of New York on October 15, 1866. Samuel was a peddler for ten years, and was given a "grubstake" by either Simon or Mannes Israel to open a store in Three Rivers. When he had accumulated sufficient capital, he started the Henrietta Skirt Company (named after his wife, Henrietta Cohn ) -- later to become the Kalamazoo Pant Co. A story is told about a "George HANDLEMAN" (called "Hanselman" by all of the family), to whom Samuel loaned the money to begin the Handleman Candy Co. Consequently, every Rosenbaum family had a five pound box of candy delivered to them each Christmas.
