Later, when the Russians took over Latvia from the Germans, there were no schools nearby, so Beila went to a Russian school in Riga, and, later, a Gymnasia there. Beila Meilach, age 19yr, scholar, with brother, Mosus [Mashie], age 16yr 2mo, scholar, arrived in New York having sailed on the steamer, SS Polonia, steerage class, from Libau (now called Liepaja; SE of Riga), Latvia, on 25 Jul 1923. Last residence and birthplace was Glasmanka; nationality, Latvian; race, Hebrew. Final destination: Sipsey, AL to Uncle Benny Grusin. Passage paid by Uncle. Never before in U.S. 5ft 6in, dark complexion, dark hair, brown eyes. Released to HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society). Her older brother, Leon, met them and they took the train to Birmingham, Alabama.
