Visited the Family History Library in Salt Lake City June 30-July 2, 2003. Prior to leaving home, I had found Amanda's birth notation in the IGI file...her given name was shown as "Maria". In the FHL catalog, I found "Birth returns, 1860-1903,filed by the attending physician, midwife or hospital for the city of Philadelphia." Narrowed Amanda down to one microfilm , and spent a good deal of time perusing it, Amanda's was (hand-)written as "Mina". Probably the way the midwife ( whose first language was probably not English) heard her name. Then, in another hand-written microfilm of "Birth authentications, 1867-1891, for births occurring 1829-1882, Philadelphia" the name was less legible...but had become "Minna", "Minni", or "Maria". Never did find the actual birth certificate copy (it would be fascinating to know if her name had been corrected there), but at least the "Maria" mystery seems to be solved!
---------------------------- Amanda's brother-in-law, Samuel Snellenburg, witnessed her marriage certificate. Samuel S. Snellenburg was a partner, with Joseph J. Snellenburg, Nathan N. Snellenburg, and Samuel L. Bloch, in "N. Snellenburg & Co., clothiers", located at 1140 Market Street and 601 S. 5th street, in Philadelphia. Samuel S. Snellenburg lived at 534 Spruce Street; Nathan lived at 905 Franklin, and Joseph lived at 706 N. 5th Street...all in Philadelphia. This store later became "Snellenburgs"...a prominent Philadelphia department store in the mid-20th century. There was also a Meyer Snellenburg, grocer, and Morris Snellenburg, clerk (father and son?), both of whom lived at 210 Bainbridge in Philadelphia. | Frohsin, Amanda (I4752)
